Isan is Thailand’s largest region, bordered by Mekong River and Laos in the North East and Cambodia to the South East. Lower Isan is most notable for its Khmer influenced ruins whereas upper Isan is full of ideal peaks perfect for trekking. The best way to explore Isan is with your own transportation, either rent a car and self drive or rent a car with a driver. For a more authentic experience, take a train. However with English not widely spoken in the region, it may be rather inconvenient.
Despite being underrated in terms of tourism, the region is home to some of Thailand’s best national park and stunning historical parks. For those who want to try the authentic Som Tum (spicy papaya salad), this region is the best place to do so.
